Marching Towards Spring

4th March 2016

This winter has been so mild (the mildest on record) it tricked the plant world into waking up early and then this week has seen the first flurries of snow! No wonder the plants are very confused! We’ve had snowdrops flowering in the garden a month earlier than usual and the trees are full of blossom already. We’ve had to cover some of the plants with fleece on the frosty nights we’ve had lately.

Even though the weather has turned colder, it is now officially Spring and it does feel good to see the days drawing out and the garden slowly coming to life. The tulips and other spring bulbs are popping up and the anemones in the polytunnel are starting to flower. I’ve also been preparing the flower beds and had some help from my lovely husband and Dad making some proper paths, in my cutting patch as I’m on a slope the straw covered paths were turning into mud slides but it’s all looking more organised, neater and safer now.

I’ve started sowing some annual seeds this week so I’m eagerly awaiting the arrival of little seedlings!  I spent quite a lot of time over the winter planning my patch and choosing what to grow, I don’t have acres to play with so have had to choose wisely. A few of my favourite annuals are icelandic Poppies for their silky crumpled petals, it amazes me how they fit into their tiny pods. Antirrhinums for their spires of fun, snappy petals, sweetpeas for their glorious perfume, delicate shades and wild trendrils and Ammi majus for it’s tall frothy white swathes, all very delicious. I’m looking forward to seeing them flowering in early summer.

But for now let’s enjoy all that Spring has to offer with it’s bright fresh foliage, pretty blossom and the promise of new life.
